Pecking Order Privacy Policy

Last updated: 13 October 2026

Pecking Order is a flock and poultry-breeding record-management app. This Privacy Policy explains how the app handles information.

Information stored in the app

Pecking Order stores the flock information you enter in the app on your device. This may include chicken and duck details, notes, dates, egg collection records, breeding and family relationships, chick-batch records, pecking-order observations, custom fields and photographs that you choose to add.

How information is used

Your information is used only to provide the app's flock-management, breeding, egg tracking, family-tree, pecking-order, backup, and export features. The publicly released app stores flock records locally and does not require an account. Optional account and cloud-backup features are being prepared for a private pilot, described below. We do not sell your flock records or use them for advertising.

Photos, backups, exports, and sharing

The app accesses photos or files when you choose to add or change a photo, create or restore a backup, export information, or share an export. Local backups and exports are created when you initiate them. Optional egg and backup reminders use device notifications when enabled or permitted.

If you choose to share or save a backup or export using another app, cloud-storage provider, email service, or device location, that service handles the information under its own privacy policy. Pecking Order does not send your flock records to Project Pecking Order unless you choose to use the optional cloud-backup pilot.

Optional accounts and cloud backup: private pilot

These features are not enabled in the publicly released app. In a pilot build, signing in is optional and the app continues to work locally without an account. Creating an account does not start a subscription or upload your existing flock records. You must explicitly link the records on your device and choose a backup before a copy is uploaded.

Supabase provides email-code sign-in. It processes your email address, account identifier, verification and session information, and security information such as sign-in times and network addresses. Login email delivery also involves the sending provider and your email provider. The app stores its sign-in session in the device's secure storage, outside flock backup files, so you can stay signed in between visits.

When you back up, a copy of the app's records and managed photos is sent to private Cloudflare storage. Backup metadata includes your account identifier, archive identifier, date, size and a checksum used to check file integrity. Our service checks your signed-in account before allowing access to a backup. Backups are protected in transit and in provider storage; they are not end-to-end encrypted with a key held only by you. The operator and service providers can process this information to run and support the service. Cloudflare and Supabase may process service and security information outside New Zealand under their respective Cloudflare privacy policy and Supabase privacy policy.

The pilot keeps the five latest completed cloud backups. An older copy is removed after a new one completes successfully. If you turn on automatic backup, the app attempts a backup when you open or return to it, when at least 24 hours have passed since the last successful backup. This is a recovery service; it does not synchronise edits between devices. A pilot archive is limited to 50 MiB. Keep a separate local backup of important records.

You can download or delete individual cloud backups in Account & cloud backup. Deleting your cloud account there removes its cloud archives, backup metadata and sign-in account; it does not erase records on your device, files you previously downloaded, or store purchases. Signing out stops automatic backups on that device but does not delete cloud copies. Expiry of pilot upload access does not by itself delete existing backups or prevent their download or deletion. Service providers may retain limited security logs or recovery copies according to their retention policies. Contact support if you cannot access your account or need help with access, correction or deletion.

Purchases and verification

Pecking Order offers optional one-time purchases, a monthly Breeder subscription and code-based, time-limited Breeder previews. Google Play or the Apple App Store processes payments and redemptions. Project Pecking Order does not receive or store your payment-card details.

To confirm ownership and expiry, the app sends the relevant product ID and store purchase token (Google Play) or transaction ID (App Store) to the Pecking Order verification service. That service checks the purchase with the store and records limited entitlement information: platform, product and transaction identifiers, entitlement status and relevant dates, campaign ID where applicable, and hashes of the store account key and verification payload. It does not store your flock records or the full store verification payload in its entitlement database. Store purchase information is also handled under Google's or Apple's own privacy terms.

Data retention and deletion

Flock information remains on your device until you delete it in the app or remove the app. Uninstalling normally removes local app data from that device. Backups or exports you separately saved or shared remain in those locations until you delete them. Purchase-verification records are kept separately to validate and restore entitlements, including time-limited access. For questions about those records or deletion, contact the address below; store purchase histories are managed by Google or Apple.

Children

Pecking Order is intended for adult poultry keepers and breeders. It is not designed for children, and Project Pecking Order does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when the app changes. The current version will always be published on this page, with its updated date shown above.
